WILSHERE SET BACK

Arsene Wenger has confirmed Jack Wilshere has suffered an injury setback in training.

The midfielder is yet to feature this season after aggravating an ankle problem on international duty in June, and subsequently undergoing surgery later in the year.

The Gunners boss had hoped to welcome the 20-year-old back into the fold in early February but that date has now been revised while the club wait for the results of a scan.

On Twitter, Wilshere wrote: 'It is true I have had a set back I can't tell you how long I have been set back because I don't know! I am very annoyed but will stay strong.'

Boss Arsene Wenger said: 'Wilshere had a little setback which is under investigation. We don't know yet how bad it is. He has pain again in his ankle when running.

'We stopped him right away. He is seeing a specialist today, so I do not want to give you any wrong information.'

Moving on to positive news, the Frenchman added: 'A few players will have tests. Bacary Sagna could be in the squad, as could Thierry Henry and Mikel Arteta. Francis Coquelin is back.'

Wilshere, who suffered the setback in training on Wednesday, had handed Arsenal a timely boost by targeting a return to full training before the end of January.

The game against Blackburn on February 4 or Sunderland a week later had been pencilled in for his return, with a view to having him up to speed by the time the Champions League second-round first-leg clash against AC Milan at the San Siro on February 15.

Wilshere's problem seemingly came as a total surprise.

Team-mate Theo Walcott told the Daily Telegraph: 'I've seen Jack every day. He's always got a little smile on his face because he wants to be back in this team. We've missed him. He's an important player even after just that one year.'

'It’s just a shame that he had that massive injury, proper serious. It could have been career-threatening. Hopefully he will be back in the next few weeks.'

He added: 'He's a player who spots something that others can’t. People compare him to Cesc [Fabregas]. I think he can be better than Cesc. Definitely. He has that character. He wants to improve, win things. He’s a good leader, a good person in the dressing room.'
