Foundation

River Plate was founded on May 25, 1901 in the city of Buenos Aires, through the merger of two existing clubs called "Santa Rosa" and "Rosales." After discussing several proposals, they decided to call it "River Plate", apparently because one of the partners (Zanotti), had seen some sailors aside a few boxes with the inscription "The River Plate." That same day, signed the charter, and decided to appoint as the first president Leopold Bard, who was also a club player.

Uniform

* Standard operator: (front) white shirt with a red band that falls at an angle from left to right, black trousers and white socks.
* Alternate Uniform: (front) black shirt with a red band that falls at an angle from left to right, black trousers and black stockings.
* Third uniform: (front) gray shirt with silver lines and two white stripes and a red between them that goes horizontally across the top of the shirt.

The history of the shirt holder of Club Atlético River Plate comes from the year 1909. The team's players (including founders) were part of a carnival troupe called "The inhabitants of hell." This consisted of a red devil, and therefore had a lot of fabric in that color. When it came time to play, players cut strips of red fabric left over and attached to a white shirt from the sides with safety pins. In 1949, on the occasion of the tragedy of Superga, River Plate wear a wool shirt with maroon, typical of the Italian club, like shirt alternative. Completed the white uniform pants and gray socks. In 1962, on the occasion of the visit of Stade de Reims (France), this gave a set of clothing that was used during some seasons as an alternative: a shirt with red body white sleeves, pants and white socks with red circles.

Stadium 1901-1938

When the club was established in 1901 the first stadium was located in an area close to the place of foundation in the Dock Sud Port of Buenos Aires. In 1909, problems with the port authority should be moved to Sarandí but should return in 1912, finally being evicted by the Head of Puerto movements in 1913.

During the remainder of 1913, in 1914 and early 1915, the club was forced to rent the Ferro Carril Oeste stadium already at that time was on the site where it is today.

Back in La Boca, in early 1915 he leased land in the street block bounded by Finch, Cabot, Aristobulo del Valle and Pedro de Mendoza. There he built a stadium of considerable size for the time, with a large grandstand roof and a modern platform. There, River was swollen and grow in prestige for 8 years.

In 1923, the leased land must be left, benefiting the club and he was forced to build a new stadium. It was built in the neighborhood of Palermo, more precisely at the intersection of Avenida Alvear (now Liberty), and Tagle. Opened on May 20, 1923, the court consisted of two side platforms.

1938- Present: El Monumental

For the start of the professional era, the Club Atletico River Plate comprised a considerable number of partners that supplied large inflows of money. Moreover, the team had been together a huge number of fans not associated. For these reasons, the leaders had the idea of building a new stadium, an idea that was materialized in 1934 when he signed the ticket you buy 5 hectares of land in the neighborhood of Belgrano more the gift by the municipality of Buenos Aires 3.5 ha.

The decision of the leadership was criticized by many, as it was said that land was the worst place to build a stadium, because of its remoteness and because their land had been reclaimed from the Rio de la Plata, which hinder its construction .

The project was carried out by the architects José Aslan and Héctor Ezcurra being May 25, 1935 the day the cornerstone was placed. To carry out the construction was due to ask great contributions to the partners and a loan to the government for $ 2,500,000.

Still, the budget was insufficient and had to postpone construction of the grandstand north for several years. It took two years to build the three remaining stands, record time considering the difficulty in the field provided. A total of 50 kilometers built stands, base of 26,000 cubic meters of concrete and 3,000 tons of steel, two years later would have cost 3 times more than the total value of the stadium because of the Second World War.

Monumental Stadium as it was called at that time was officially opened in May 1935, in a match between Peñarol and Uruguay River.

In 1958 due to the sale of Omar Sivori, entered the club $ 10,000,000, part of which were used for the construction of the north grandstand. That year he persuaded the stadium has the capacity to record 100,000 fans.

The last stage of construction took place in 1977/78, at the hands of the military government, on the grounds that River was one of the hosts of the World Championship. The government built the top shelf of the podium turned north and lower in silver trays, reducing the current capacity: 65,645.

Finally, in 1986 was given the name he bore until recently, after the president who initiated its construction: Antonio Vespucio Liberti

Because of its excellent capacity and location, the stadium has been used repeatedly for the actions of the national team. It is considered the best stadium in South America and South American football mecca

Nicknames

In the Argentine football a tradition of dub equipment by its characteristic features. In the case of Club Atlético River Plate, his nickname is Millonarios, a nickname that has its origins in the very high prices paid for purchases of Bernabé Ferreyra Carlos Peucelle and, in 1931 and 1932 respectively.

Also, rivals call Hens offensively. This nickname comes when River after losing the Libertadores Cup final against Club Atlético Peñarol in 1966 where he was beaten and ended up winning 2-0, 4-2, was playing a match against Banfield and loyalty of the team pulled hen the court as to outwit his opponent. Oscar Pinino More at her, kicked him. Notwithstanding the odious nickname, the fans have taken it many times in a humorous way, to the point that it is not unusual to see fans dressed in feathers, large spikes, wrinkles and red peaks. Nor is it surprising that the same fans of River in her songs of encouragement, relate to their stadium as the henhouse.
