Fabianski - I hope the game stays the same

Lukasz Fabianski is not among those leading the calls for the introduction of goal-line technology. 

FIFA are expected to reach a definitive conclusion on the matter at the International Football Association Board meeting on July 2 - the day after the Euro 2012 final. 

But Fabianski is concerned that technology could detract from the romance of the game as we know it. 

“I don't know if we are going to get goal-line technology in the future but to be honest I would love to keep it as it is,” he told a Chinese fans’ webchat. “I know people have their own opinions on the subject but for me, football is football. It is a game of mistakes and that is part of it. 

“There is still no technology used by the officials. Outside the game, for the commentators and experts, I think it is really helpful but during the games for the officials it has always been the same.”

While the Polish international is not keen on the idea of technology during the game, its usage everywhere else is difficult to avoid.

Ben Foster created headlines in the 2009 Carling Cup final after using an iPod to inspire Manchester United’s penalty shoot-out success over Tottenham. But Fabianski says, when it comes to him, it will always be gut feeling over statistics. 

“When it comes to me I just try to follow my instincts, “ he said. “Obviously before the games you get the statistics from the goalkeeping coaches about the penalty takers you might face. It is helpful but when you are in the game you just wonder, ‘should I follow the piece of paper or should I follow my instincts?'

“I think the main thing with penalties is that you have to keep your nerve and wait as long as possible. If you do that then you can put the striker under pressure and he can maybe freak out at the end when he sees the goalkeeper standing in the middle. 

“We have a goalkeeping iPad but we have never brought it to the bench or used it in games. We will use it maybe just before penalty kicks. Hopefully we will end up in the FA Cup final and, if it goes to penalties, it might be really helpful.”
